Baghdad: The US military on Wednesday said it is launching strikes on Iranian targets in response to Tehran's attack on American forces a day earlier.

US Central Command said, "the strikes are a powerful response to yesterday's attempted Iranian attack” in a post on social media, adding that they began Wednesday evening.

U.S. forces began launching strikes against Iran at 8 p.m. ET today. The strikes are a powerful response to yesterday's attempted Iranian attacks on U.S. forces based in the Middle East.

It is a further escalation after a period of calm, with the US saying it had intercepted strikes from Iran a day earlier and carried out separate strikes alongside Saudi Arabia on Tehran-backed militias in neighbouring Iraq.
